Documentary filmmaking: Passion, Challenges, and Rewards

On this occasion, I would like to talk about documentary filmmaking in the region. A topic that we addressed in episode two of the Flashback podcast, which I am passionate about for its complexity and nuances. In addition to delving into the world of documentary filmmaking, we had a very special guest. One of the most experienced documentary filmmakers in Nicaragua and with a surprising talent. Martha Clarissa Hernandez. The first thing that is clear to me is that for documentary filmmaking, passion is first needed. It is what guarantees that you can defend your idea or goal. And that despite the adversities, you continue with your endeavor. Also, because documentary filmmaking is a difficult task, both physically and emotionally. Depending on the place, the character and the theme to be addressed, you can find yourself with such extreme decisions as: Do I choose to carry the provisions or the camera?

And another very important point that every documentary filmmaker must keep in mind is that the documentary is a "living being" that grows, evolves and mutates. So you have to be open to the possibility of changing course as needed by the piece. As an example, I put the moment when Martha Clarissa, while filming "Lubaraun", discovers, evaluates and accepts that her piece must mutate into more pieces that cover a spectrum of characters and situations that could not be done with one piece. In fact, she says it is one of the most important and successful decisions she has made as a documentary filmmaker.

Of course, we cannot overlook the issue of financing. We know that it is not the industry with the most budget. Many times you have to resort to the help of acquaintances and colleagues, who are inspired by the director's passion.

But with all these difficulties, we come to the conclusion that making documentaries in Nicaragua and in the world is worth it. For cultural value, experience, the responsibility of telling what others do not see and because there are many stories out there that need to be told. So I urge documentary filmmakers who read or listen to the FLASHBACK podcast to not falter and to continue with that wonderful work. I would love to read experiences and opinions on this topic.
